1. The George Fisher Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded annually at
the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Banquet in Fort Smith, Arkansas held
in the month of January.
2. When finances are available, the minimum
amount of $1,500.00 scholarship(s) will be given respectively to: (1) graduating
seniors from high school or enrolled high school juniors (2) currently enrolled
non-graduating undergraduates who have completed a minimum of twelve college
credit hours and (3) non-graduating graduate and professional students majoring
in education, health care, political science, public service, or public administration.
3. Applicants shall be
high school juniors, seniors and/or students currently enrolled in an accredited
college or university.
4. The Juneteenth Planning Commission,
Inc. (JPCI) will have the scholarship applications available for interested parties
by the first week of October (preceding January’s banquet). Applications
must be submitted to the committee by mail to: P.O. Box 8083, Ft. Smith, AR 72702
by the 10th of December prior to that year’s banquet.
5. The members of the JPCI Scholarship
Selection committee shall review the applications and submit their recommendations
to the JPCI for final approval. Once the name(s) has/have been accepted by the
JPCI, the recipient(s), an ABF and the Fort Smith Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday
Planning Committee will be notified in writing prior to the MLK Banquet. Recipient(s)
will be invited and expected to attend the MLK Banquet to be recognized for their
scholarship award.
6. The undergraduate or high school student
must not have less than a 2.5 cumulative grade point average during the academic
year in which the scholarship is awarded. The Graduate or Professional School
student must not have less than a 2.7 cumulative GPA.
7. Once the student has fulfilled the
obligation of submitting proof of enrollment and a cumulative grade point average
from the registrar’s office to the JPCI, the scholarship will be sent to
the chosen institution in the name of the student or can be sent directly to
the student depending circumstances to be decided by the JPCI. The scholarship
shall be awarded on or before the initial day of the first semester of that academic
year, if awardees have submitted all pertinent information.
8. Forfeiture of
the scholarship shall result if the student fails to enroll in an accredited
college or university during the year in which the scholarship is awarded (the
fall semester after graduation for a senior in high school and the current semester
for the college student).
9. In the event forfeiture occurs, the
scholarship shall remain in the scholarship fund and will be awarded the following
year to another deserving student UNLESS the JPCI recommends a runner-up for
this award as to which all rules and regulations will still apply. |
